LOOKING AHEAD
Sunday, February 1 - Monthly meeting at the usual time and place. (2:00 PM at
the Christ United Methodist Church, 1480 Zettler Road, Columbus Ohio.
Sunday, March 1 - Monthly meeting at the usual time and place.
================================================================
Bill Brown opened the meeting on Sunday, January 4, 2009, with a demonstration
on finishing edges. He mixed Gum Tragacanth and edge coat, and applied it to the
edge, to show how it made a nice edge with only one coat. Bill had meant this
demonstration to be a sharing of ideas for finishing edges, and that is what
happened. Allan puts Resolene over edge coat to seal it. Resolene can be mixed
with dye for an edge. Polish Resolene with a soft cloth.
Allan and Jim suggest dampening the leather slightly before applying the finish.
Don suggested putting two sided scotch tape between two pieces of leather, with
the tape barely sticking out, and sand very lightly in only one direction. If
this is done carefully, it results in joining two pieces of leather together so
smoothly that the seam does not show on the edge.
SHORT SHOW MEETING
Robin has the receipt for the easels he bought to use at the show. He asked
if he should turn them in and be paid for them for use of the guild at various
times, or if he should keep them for his own use. It was moved and seconded that
the guild would pay for them (around $30.00) and keep them as guild property.
Motion carried.

Mark is planning to make up two books about the show and give one to the
Indianapolis Guild and keep one in our files, for help with any future shows.
Allan received information that Bob Kovar of Toledo Industrial Sewing Machine
has won his battle with Kidney Cancer. Bob had reserved a vendor table at the
2008 Federation Show and had to cancel it because he found that he had cancer
and the doctor felt he must have surgery as soon as it could be scheduled. His
surgery was on October 14th at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, he was
released on the 16th, drove home on the 17th, and back in
the office on the 21st. We are very pleased and thankful that
everything went well. The Secretary was instructed to send Bob a card.
THE SHOW MEETING WENT RIGHT INTO THE BUSINESS MEETING
Former BLCO members, Jim and Jeanie Starr, attended the meeting and rejoined
the Guild. There were twelve members present at the January meeting on January 4th.
Jim Starr moved and Bill Brown seconded a motion that the report on the December
party meeting be accepted as published.
David Scheiderer gave the Treasurer’s report. George moved that we accept the
Treasurer’s report, pending audit.
Robin moved and George seconded a motion to postpone the audit for at least a
month. The CDs have not been mailed, and we will need to purchase material to
mail them, and that is a Show expense. Motion carried.
OLD BUSINESS
We discussed the Simon Kenton University of Scouting event which will be on
January 24th. At the December meeting we decided to accept their
offer to let us have a table in the midway area for free. We decided not to sell
things at our table. We will have things to show, perhaps do some demonstrating,
and give out our BLCO flyer. I will contact other people who are not present
today, to see who else might come for awhile.
I was asked to have one hundred new flyers printed. They will be like the old
ones, except the 2008 Show Chairman will be removed from the list of contacts,
and the new website will be inserted instead of the old website.
Mark, our Ohio State Fair contact person, needs to contact Delilah
Hetterscheidt, regarding our participation in the 2009 Ohio State Fair. Mark
asked what to say.
Bill moved and I seconded the motion to contribute $100.00 again toward prize
money for leather entries.

The 2009 Ohio State Fair runs from July 29 to August 9. We decided that our
Guild will demonstrate on both weekends, from 10 - 6 on August 1st, 2nd,
8th and 9th. On each day we demonstrate, there will be two
shifts: 10 - 2 and 2 - 6. When it is closer to Fair time if we have members who
feel they can demonstrate on any of the week days, we will see if they would
want us to do that. Mark will give this information to Delilah.
NEW BUSINESS: We want to have more activities this year, because we will not
have time taken up with planning the Federation Show.
Members want more demonstrations.
Mark will see if people are still needed for the Brown Bag Lunch program, and we
will consider that as a service project. He will obtain more current
information.
Sandy was not present today, but has suggested that we have a flea market among
our members. Members felt it would probably be best to have this as part of one
of our regular meetings. It was suggested that we might like to have the flea
market instead of a demo at our April meeting.
We will contact members of the Santa Maria Project to see if they need our help.
That would be a summertime service project. L. Jay Vannoy made a leather tankard
for them last year. We will try to contact someone to give us current
information on the Santa Maria Project when we are at the University of
Scouting.
Several members want us to have some workshops this year. Suggestions were for
belts, buckles, note pad holders, cell phone cases, lamps, etc.
We should do more service projects. Suggestions: Pet Leashes or belts to give to
the Free Store as we did a few years ago. Carol Martin suggested donating
something to the Faith Mission. We could hold a leather class for a Scout Group.
Robin will do a belt demonstration in February. Allan will do a demonstration in
March.
Jim Starr asked if we could have use of a TV to show CDs or Tapes. Severa
l members have a excellent CDs or Tapes, showing a famous leather artist giving
a class which would be of interest to members. We could watch and then discuss
the class.
The Maple Syrup Festival at Camp Lazarus was mentioned. Some of our members
participated in that one year and nearly froze.
The Prairie States Spring Leather Jamboree Show will be on April 24 - 26 at Burr
Ridge. The Show is titled “Back at the Ranch.“.

Allan suggested that we have a constitution committee review the constitution this
year. Jim and Mark volunteered to do this, and Allan will also be on the
committee.
Mark moved that we have a picnic this Summer with another guild. Robin suggested
we have a picnic without another guild. No decision was made on this.
Don and Carol said they will not be on any committees this year. They spent a
great deal of time on the Show last year. They are planning to take some trips
this year, will remain guild members, and come to our meetings when they are not
on a trip.
I am to add Bill Brown and Robin Johnson to the list of people who want CDs.
Mark is to get the CDs to me in a few days and I am to mail them.
The meeting was adjourned.
================================================================
Saturday, January 24 - We had a table at the Simon Kenton University of
Scouting, held at the Reynoldsburg High School, 6699 East Livingston Avenue,
from 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM. Allan and David Scheiderer, Robin Johnson, Mark
Strain, and Geraldene and George Pittenger worked at our table. We gave several
of our brochures to people interested in coming to a meeting and perhaps joining
our Guild.
Glenn Dickey, who works with the Santa Maria Project came and talked with us. He
was very thankful for the tankard which L. Jay Vannoy made and donated to the
project last year. (Another lady, whose name I did not get, also expressed
gratitude for the beautiful tankard.) Soon after April 4, it would be very good
if a couple of our members could come and tour the Santa Maria with some of
their people, and make note of leather things they could use so we could decide
what we could make and contribute. They need rubbing pieces, hinges, and a chest
cover which Glenn thought of. He is sure there are other things. Glenn Dickey’s
phone number is 891-0141. It would be good to contact him around the beginning
of April.
Camp Lazarus was advertising their Maple Syrup Festival on February 28 and March
7. I have a flyer about it to show at our meeting.
Respectfully Submitted,
Geraldene J. Pittenger
